Instead of using javascript, have you considered using eXist as a native backend XML
database?
http://exist.sourceforge.net/
It is XQuery 1.0 / XPath 2.0 compatible.
There is an old tutorial in the OpenLaszlo forum explaining how to connect OpenLaszlo client
to eXist database.
Try out the eXist sandbox first .....
http://demo.exist-db.org/sandbox/sandbox.xql
returns to OpenLaszlo are all XML format.
