It is not a matter of public or not, it is that the argument (and  
return type) signatures do not match.

The following example shows how to work around your problem by  
explicitly declaring the function types in your override:

<canvas>
   <class name="test" extends="view">
     <method name="setVolume" args="v:Number" returns="void">
       Debug.info("Calling %w(%w)", arguments.callee, v);
       super.setVolume(v);
     </method>
   </class>
   <test oninit="setVolume(42)" />
</canvas>
