I think the skew is possible because there are two places where the  
version.id is set.  In nightly-go, there is an if/else chain that  
looks at the branch name and sets the version.id accordingly (I can't  
quite fathom the algorithm, but it seems that it corresponds to the  
last dot release out of that branch).  But we also set version.id in  
build.properties in the source.  It seems that for the linux build,  
the version.id in nightly-go is passed in (and overrides what might  
otherwise come from build.properties? is that how ant works?), but the  
version.id from nightly-go is _not_ passed to the mac and windows  
builds, so they will pick up the value from build.properties.
