Application Sighting: OpenLaszlo makes IBM's home page "special"
If you haven't already seen IBM's "What makes you special?" campaign, it is definitely worth a look. Go directly to the campaign here: http://www-306.ibm.com/e-business/ondemand/us/innovation/index.shtml and get a look at the new OpenLaszlo-inspired interface. It is a multi-panel, eye-catching application using many design elements, including expanding and collapsing panels, a horizontally sliding scrollbar of images, embedded podcasts, and animated context-specific text and graphics. I wrote a few OpenLaszlo applets over the holidays. I'm calling them "applets" because they aren't full-fledged transactional applications; nevertheless, I thought they might be interesting to a few developers.
First, the Aargh! page answers the question, how do you spell "aargh"? It uses statistics from Google, and both an HTML table and an OpenLaszlo application to visualize the result. (Click on the "visualize" button at the top of the table, to switch between them.)
Then, Ben's roundrectbutton got me excited about using OpenLaszlo for lighter-weight interfaces, so I added a button bar to the top of my home page.
And finally, Jon Udell posted about visualizing del.icio.us tags over time. He uses an Excel spreadsheet to implement the visualization, but I wanted something more interactive. Hence: expialidocio.us.
One of the things I like about OpenLaszlo is that it makes it easy to write small applets like this quickly -- because they just aren't a lot of code.
Bryan Reiger, the creator of the beautiful A Wee Guide to Tropical Fish, has gone fishing again.
"Gliffy is a suite of online applications designed to replace expensive and difficult to maintain desktop software. Since Gliffy applications work in any web browser, sharing your work is made simple."
The first Gliffy application is an online diagram creation and sharing tool. It's in closed beta, but you can see a glimpse of it here.
Mainada Online Comic Book Creator is a free online comic creation and viewing program. Artists can create comics online and publish them immediately; readers are able to view and rate them.
This site uses both OpenLaszlo and Ruby on Rails.
